The Washington Karate Association Lakewood Dojo was opened on October 16, 1995 in the Oakbrook Plaza Shopping Center.   Its popularity and student body grew steadily as the word spread that finally Lakewood had a Traditional Karate Dojo. Each year The Lakewood Dojo performed extremely well at local, national, and international competitions.

The Lakewood Dojo has a reputation of producing outstanding competitors as well as having strong spirited karate-ka.   This combination helped the student body to continue to grow until we were at capacity and began to look for a bigger location.

Harmony and strength are important partners. A balanced character is most often achieved through persistence, consistent practice of correct action and mindfulness toward morality. Karate-do specifically points to Karate as one vehicle for self awareness and personal development. When one understands that character is derived from a series of challenges, the process or path itself becomes enjoyable.

Sensei Chuck Sweigart has been the instructor at The Lakewood Dojo for over 15 years. Active within the karate community as an instructor, official, and athlete, his list of accomplishments include: Three time national champion, World Karate Federation referee A (kata and kumite) member USA National Karate-do Federation referee committee, and Youth Olympic Karate Program referee coordinator.

Facility

Modern, clean, spacious facility with 5000 square feet of space containing:

4 practice areas:

• 2 - 1000 sf matted areas
• 1 - 1000 sf traditional wood floor area
• 1 - 1000 sf workout area with weights and treadmill
• Spacious lobby and waiting area

Programs

A flexible schedule of classes available throughout the afternoon and evening, Monday through Saturday, with a variety of programs to choose from.

Karate

Beginner through advanced karate instruction for all ages. Classes available 6 days/week.

Kinder Karate

For children ages 3-6. An excellent introduction to the karate environment in a fun, safe, and motivating way. Emphasis on positive attitude and discipline, enhanced motor skills, mental focus, and following instructions.

After School Program

Weekdays 3-6pm. Transportation from some schools available. Study area with supervised instruction. Empasis on homework completion.

Yoga

Hatha Yoga classes by certified instructor.
